Empowering the Visually Impaired: Transcribing Islamic Knowledge to Braille.

At Share the Light of Islam, our commitment to educational support extends beyond traditional boundaries. In April 29th 2022, the United Blind Muslim Association Sierra Leone approached us during a pivotal meeting where issues faced by visually impaired individuals were discussed. Among their heartfelt requests was the need for access to Islamic knowledge through Braille-transcribed Islamic books.

Understanding the importance of their appeal, Share the Light of Islam, together with the generous contribution from our esteemed donor partner, Sister Mariam from England, stepped forward. Sister Mariam, with a heartwarming gesture, brought not only monetary support but also an abundance of essential food supplies that were distributed among the members of the United Blind Muslim Association.

With the unwavering support and grace of Allah, we were able to sponsor the transcription of a significant number of Islamic books into Braille. This was a monumental step towards aiding not only the United Blind Muslim Association but also their visually impaired Muslim brethren and sisters across various blind schools in Sierra Leone.

On November 19, 2022, the United Blind Muslim Association officially launched and commenced the distribution of these Braille-transcribed Islamic books to different blind schools across the country. The impact was profound, bringing invaluable resources and knowledge to those who had long been deprived of such essential educational materials.

The President of the United Blind Muslim Association conveyed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the Association. In their sincere expressions, they acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Share the Light team and Sister Mariam. They emphasized the significance of this initiative, especially considering the prolonged period during which their pleas for help remained unanswered. The project, valued at approximately 3 to 4 thousand dollars, symbolized a beacon of hope and support.
However, the journey doesn’t end here. The United Blind Muslim Association, with a deep resolve and dedication, aims to continue their mission. They express the need for ongoing support and donations to further enhance educational resources for the visually impaired in their community.

This project stands as a testament to the collective efforts of individuals coming together to make a difference. It exemplifies the transformative power of collaboration and compassion, ultimately making education and Islamic knowledge accessible to those who might have been otherwise overlooked.

At Share the Light of Islam, we are committed to continuing our educational support initiatives, striving to make a positive impact on communities in need. We urge all those who resonate with our cause to join us on this journey, as every contribution counts in illuminating the lives of those longing for educational resources and knowledge.
